I've just posted Making social reporting an OpenBusiness , explaining how I'm using reporting in one of the projects on this site. It may give some clues on how social reporters can make a living beyond event reporting.

Rather wish I could be in Seattle for this:
http://journalismthatmatters.org/
Join Journalism That Matters' national series of extraordinary action-oriented discussions in Seattle this January as we explore the changing relationship between journalism and communities.
If journalism’s old story was to provide people with the necessary information to be free and self-governing citizens, in the emerging news ecology, journalism not only informs, but engages, inspires, and activates people within their role as free and self-governing citizens.
As journalists struggle to understand their changing role in an environment where anyone can publish and report on world events, citizens struggle to shift from mere consumers of information to co-creators engaging in conversation about what is meaningful as citizens in a free democracy.

New Year greetings to community and social reporters. By way of a conversation starter about who and what we are (or hope to be) I've added a forum post on our possible resolutions: Make Sense, Be Positive, Help Out ... and added the question: should we be investigators too? Clay Shirky says we are facing a shortage of Accountability Journalists. Is that us?

I've registered to turn up at the Sept 21st Workshop (Monday) - I'm going to roll up at 14:00 - It took a while to track down the registration page so I'm hoping I'm not busting the fire regulations wide open. E-mail follows if I have to divert.

If being at the venue isn't appropriate I'm at the RSA for a meet beforehand (with Sam Maclean on similar subject) and be good to catch up with attendees who have availability before and after.

I've blogged a piece about social and community reporters that I hope will help start a discussion for us on Monday. Really appreciate some comments there.

Thanks Gary - delighted to do anything to help. It looks as if we might have the makings of a collaborative support and knowledge-sharing programme.
