Hey Aidan - thanks for sharing this feedback. I think you and the CV team are right on! Do you have any projects or other workshops you've already done or are in the works that touch on building trust? Maybe it's a blog series waiting to happen (in…

Hi Amy, It was great to have your input (and David's) at the Digital Engagement event. I really like your word cloud it highlights very neatly the key messages and thoughts from the day. It was really interesting to observe that the two seminars p…

Hey all - I just did a blog post about my reflections on the report outs, getting to hear the key bits from all the conversations during the sessions. What was the result? The two most important things are TRUST and COMMUNITY - who knew :) The post…

I agree with Andy - if you know how many people or how much time, Survey Monkey is excellent. If you are unsure and just want to leave the form up, it could cost more than you want ($19/month I think). Have never used Zoomerang either.

Dave - glad to have you on board. :) Manny - thanks for sharing the link, hope you'll keep us posted on work on that project, too!

Seems a sensible move - I always did wonder why the electronic SxS handbook site didn't have some sort of forum on it!

Thanks, David! I'm excited that we do have bits of our event yesterday captured on video so we can reuse them and refer to them to literally keep the conversations going! Am diving into the video section now myself!

Hey Dave [B] I think you're right to ask about the purpose of this stuff and to question the focus on technology and media rather than outcomes and social change. Well-spotted and well said. It encouraged me to post about my concerns, which are ba…

Anything you would like to say about you or your projects?
I am dedicated to supporting and educating nonprofits and the progressive social change sector about evolving technologies that cultivate and engage communities. My passion is in connecting nonprofits with new media technologies, watching the field of nptech evolve, and having conversations about where we can go next while still getting everyone on board with what we have already.

I’m happy to have spoken at conferences, workshops, and training days in the US and the UK. I’m a member of and have served in different capacities for NTEN (as a local organizer in Portland, OR, and an ongoing volunteer) and NetSquared (where I’m currently the Global Community Development Manager and the organizer of London Net Tuesday), and a fellow of the RSA. I also recently co-authored Social by Social, a handbook in using social technologies for social impact.

Project Spaces: A Format for Outcome-Driven Events

This event format that I'm calling Project Spaces is a response to my experience and what I hear echoed throughout the "innovation" sector: that we have lots of opportunities to come together and people are excited to share and collaborate, but nothing ever "happens." Project Spaces is a format that includes a longer-term process instead of just one day and requires commitment, excitement and purpose in order to succeed. If you are an organization or group that wants to catalyze and support comm… Continue

How to Join This Network: Ensuring new members are also community members

This might be the first private online network you've joined - or maybe you can't even count the number of groups and networks you belong to online. Either way, we want this network to be a safe place for ideas, an easy way for people interested in the issues discussed to find each other, and a secure place for members to find and network with each other. As all online spaces are, we are susceptible to spammers and trolls (not the under-the-bridge type, but the ones who may want you to find chea… Continue

Changes to this Ning: Local Communities moving to Social by Social

Hi everyone - Wanted to quickly share some thinking and updates about this network:

We are expanding the network and goals here, and changing the name to reflect that. We hope you'll find that exciting, will stay with us, and invite others to join. This explanation is a bit lengthy, but we want to be transparent, so hope it is helpful.

The network was originally set up around the September 21 2009 workshop that was organised by the Social by Social team with Department for Communities and Loca… Continue

What do you want to talk about on September 21?

Our workshop is shaping up as a great opportunity to hear about the plans of government and national programmes to support local online communities and sites - and to explore the practicalities of setting up and running them. We'll be looking at what social technology means for local activists, local government, and local media - and how to blend new stuff with the rich mix of existing communications and relationships in any area.

Our host from the Department for Communities and Local Governmen… Continue

Hi Amy, thanks for the reply. I've been chatting about the relationship between offline and online presence, learning and social technologies with David Jennings, David Gauntlett and Dougald Hine at the SoE Unplugged! meetup on Wednesday mornings at the Royal Festival (5th floor). Be good to have some chats with you and David W. when you get back. Enjoy the break.

Hi Amy, just bought your book on Amazon and thrilled to actually communicate with you! I really admire your ability to engage people.
I am a web designer working to turn residential communities (HOAs and condos) in Austin, Texas into something people like and want through my blog, PropertyLinesNewsletter.com.

I am passionate about teaching community building, but find engagement a struggle. Although my heart is in it, if it does not start paying for itself soon I will have to cease work in this area, despite acknowledgments from the community for my work.
