Hey Ingrid Did you get many responses to this? I'm interested in whether your requirements might be able to be delivered by some of the open source existing templates which are available, rather than spending on custom builds (as the gartner exampl…

Stephen Hilton suggests over here that the need for collaboration around climate change may push councils into use of social media - and presumably new approaches to knowledge sharing. Other drivers, opportunities?

Thanks Roger. Those of us who haven't had a proper job for some time won't/didn't notice the passing of the retirement line:-). I'm sure Dave won't mind me reposting ... though worth following the original for the discussions. From Twitter I think…

Hi – my first post to the site and what better place to do it than on the back of a thread initiated by Ingrid Koehler who alerted me to the site through the IDeA’s great communities of practice platform. David (Wilcox) writes: One good [cross-over…

I'm not so sure it's all about climate change and more about how social media can naturally fit with open, "positive" issues (everyone loves the environment, right? - even if climate change is controversial in some circles) and is focused around thi…

Yes, thanks Ingrid, all very encouraging. I'd obviously also welcome your views, either here or to me directly, on the key things local councils and other organisations need to know about social media in their work. I'm particularly interested in a…

Ingrid - thanks so much to you, Steve Dale and all involved in the Knowledge Hub for giving us that vote of confidence on top of all the inspiration and open development you shared last year. We'll be asking your friends and ours to identify some ke…

In response to Mark and David, the whole point of the Knowledge Hub is to be able to link people, groups and conversations who share a common interest or goal. The voluntary (third) sector is a key part of the public service sector, as are the multi…

Right now we have some communities with strong participation from local partners, including the voluntary sector. We'd hope to see that increasing. It may be that there need to be some 'walls' placed around some conversations....if they are particul…

It would be interesting to play through a scenario (s) with strong 3rd sector involvement, and see what that means for khub configuration/procedures. We used bits of the socialbysocial game, and I'm sure it could be made more DIY playable locally if…

Local by social: social media as an opportunity for local public services

There are a lot of really good, really valid reasons why local government is not always an early adopter when it comes to new technology, like social media.
Local government is plenty busy with a lot of other things. Local
government has to be careful with public money, so it’s reasonable to
take a wait and see attitude…to a point. But there comes a time when
the weight of evidence is strong enough to take a risk. With social
media, I think we’ve j

Imagining a connected future: Knowledge Hub Advisory Group

Feeling crafty

I love crafts. I don't do much by way of crafts anymore at home, but I love a good workshop based on the use of brown paper and stickers and coloured bits of paper. The Blue Peter method of facilitation.

Ocasionally you get people (often senior) balking at rolling up their sleeves and gluing pictures on paper. So, it's often best to show one you made earlier, just to set some parameters on it and show that it will be useful.

Yesterday at the 2nd meeting of the… Continue

A few links

Yesterday Michelle from Cambridge outlined the issue of concerns about the use of free websites - (like Ning). I'm assuming that data security and persistence of the site were some of the concerns. These are valid concerns and one of the things which shift councils toward building "bespoke" sites rather than using almost off the shelf products that are either free or have a low cost "pro version".

I'm not sure if the following links have the answers, but they might help.

Here's a recent US doc… Continue

Hi Ingrid. We met briefly yesterday at the end of the event. After I'd walked off, I immediately thought of something I wanted to speak to you about. We have a few projects which have come though our Innovation Fund which have piloted initiatives with local authorities and are now looking for new Council's to work with. I wondered whether you would be able to advise me at all on how I can help these projects spread the word about what they have done and how they could help local authorities. Happy to discuss in further detail and would appreciate any advice you may have.
