A community around using social tech for social impact

You may have noticed there's a new event that's been added to Local Communities - the Talk About Local Unconference in Stoke-on-Trent on Saturday 3rd October.

In case you've not heard of Talk About Local, it's a project to give people in their communities a powerful online voice. We want to help people communicate and campaign more effectively and influence events in the places in which they live, work or play.

This Unconference is essentially for people who are, or would like to be, doing that - an event for 'real people, running real hyperlocal sites to network with people who are doing the same thing.' So people managing or thinking about starting sites such as:

Kings Cross Environment - 'Help us make our neighbourhood a better place'
Pits'n'Pots - 'For the news that matters in Stoke-on-Trent'
Digbeth is Good - 'Culture pubs, and a whole lot more'
Parwich.org - village community blog from Derbyshire

If this sounds like you, or if you feel you have something special to offer people providing this service, please sign up by completing the simple pre-registration form. As soon as we have the venue confirmed we’ll drop you a mail with all the details.

As an Unconference, the event will be free, fun, relaxed and informal. We will be holding social media surgeries during the day where you can come along and speak to friendly developers and experts to get advice about your site or how to fix that niggling problem you just can’t seem to get your head around.

Just seen a tweet that this page isn't loading. It won't load on my connection either. I have taken my laptop next door to another network and it loads fine. The same thing happens on my Ning site. I have reported it to Ning and they say it isn't their problem. The fact it is happening with another site proves to me that it is a ning problem and nothing to do with our computers or networks. Just thought I would post this here in case anyone else has the same issue.

Thanks Nicky for giving us news of the first of the autumn events that have been on the horizon - more here. Free, fun and not London - sounds great! Any special deals at The Leopard for anyone wanting to a make a weekend of it?
Do of course use this network for any further discussions if useful ... create a group, whatever.
